When we appointed Damien Hardwick as coach, in late 2009, he made us acutely aware of the work that was ahead of us.
Firstly, the process involved a significant change to our playing list.
We subsequently turned over a third of the list, resulting in the loss of more than 1000 games of AFL experience.
Next came the introduction and teaching of a new game plan that would hold up under the intense pressure of AFL football.
With such a young group, we were well aware that this would take 12-18 months at least, to develop, master and, ultimately, become second nature to the team.
Over the first seven rounds of the season, we have seen small signs of the development of this game style.
And, slowly, we are improving many aspects of our game that are still deficient.
It will take time, but the signs are promising, particularly from our younger brigade, in Martin, Cotchin, Astbury, Deledio and Nason.
We look forward to debuting even more youngsters as the year progresses.
Having said that, there have also been times this season when we have been disappointed with the efforts of our playing group, particularly in the area of contested football.
While we are prepared to be tolerant of developing a game style, we will not tolerate a lack of intensity and effort around contested football, one of the key platforms of Damien’s game style.
What has been particularly pleasing, and important, to all of us involved at the Club, is the fantastic support and unity shown by our members and supporters.
In a year when most people in the football world expected us to struggle, to have 41,000 paid members gives us all great strength and encouragement to continue down the path we have taken.
Brendon Gale and his team continue to stay positive and, with the team of quality people we have assembled at Punt Road, success will not be far away.
At the moment it feels a bit like us against the rest of the AFL world - but we wouldn’t have it any other way, as it will make the rewards even sweeter.
