RAGING Brownlow medal favourite Gary Ablett has tried to downplay the growing hype surrounding his recent white-hot form, saying he’d rather the media focused on Geelong’s superb team performances.
In an extraordinary run of stellar individual performances, Ablett has averaged 34 possessions, five marks, six tackles and a goal per game over the past five weeks.
Ablett effortlessly gathered 37 disposals and kicked two goals to lead the Cats to a crushing 135-point victory over the West Coast Eagles at Subiaco Oval last night.
“I went alright,” Ablett said, in a remarkable piece of under-statement.
“I don’t really want to talk about my own performance. I just went out there, tried to do my job and the ball fell my way, which is good.
“It’s never about any individual; it’s about the team performance.
“The guys played great tonight. We came over with a plan and we stuck to it.”
Ablett said he refused to be distracted by the intense media spotlight on his Brownlow chances, and had just enjoyed the freedom of not having a heavy tag placed on him by the Eagles.
“Look, I don’t really read the papers or anything like that too much,” he said.
“I just go out and play my role for the team, and whatever happens, happens.”
“West Coast have got a pretty good midfield, and they chopped and changed a lot trying to mix up the match-ups. It was good to be able to run around with a bit of space.”
In an ominous warning to the rest of the competition, Ablett said the Cats were still working their way back to their best form.
“This year we’ve been good in patches, we just haven’t been able to do it for four quarters,” he said.
“It’s been something we’ve been working on for the last few weeks, and to get out there tonight and play four consistent quarters was fantastic.
“I think there’s always improvement. I guess from now we want to make sure we keep playing four consistent quarters like we did tonight.
“We’ve got a lot of guys who are pushing to play senior footy and have been unlucky to not be getting a game. It’s always good for your side, because the guys in the side really have to perform to keep their spots.”
Ablett said the Geelong players were looking forward to the break next week and would use it to freshen up before travelling to Adelaide to face the Crows.
