Richmond and North Melbourne have joined forces to create the Eureka Game in what the clubs hope will become an icon game of the AFL.

The Eureka Game intends to recognise, celebrate and educate football followers about the important role workers have played in shaping and advancing Australian life over many generations since the events of Eureka.

AFL legend Kevin Sheedy has worked closely with both clubs to develop the concept of this fantastic initiative, which will begin with the Round 2 clash between the clubs on Sunday, March 30.

“We are blessed to be living in this country and I applaud these two great clubs for joining forces to thank and celebrate the contribution of the worker to this nation,” Sheedy said.

“This game will recognise all workers from farmers to the small business operators, laborers to surgeons, chief executives to trainees; it will be a wonderful celebration.”

Both club chief executives, Richmond’s Steven Wright and North’s Eugene Arocca, said the concept had the potential to grow into one of the AFL’s most significant fixtures.

“Within five years this game can be an icon match each AFL season as we celebrate the diverse nature of our nation’s employment history,” Wright said.

Arocca said a game at the MCG between two inner city clubs was the perfect way to celebrate all Australian workers.

“The experience of a match involving Australia’s national game, played on the People’s Ground, shared with family, friends and work colleagues is the perfect way to celebrate the significant contribution we, as Australians, have all made in the workforce,” Arocca said.

Festivities for the match will start at Punt Road from 2pm on game day with a great Australian BBQ along with family activities and entertainment for the fans.

A highlight of match celebrations will be the 100 workers in uniform representing their profession by marching on-field and creating guard of honour for the two teams to enter the arena.

Workers will be selected from fans who apply on-line through the club websites to be involved in the pre-match activities.
