Cook, who joined the Board of the Hawthorn Football Club in 2002, will stand down from his current position as Club Director, following six years of outstanding service.
The Board has resolved as a result of Mr Cooks resignation from the Board to reduce its members from nine to eight, further streamlining the operations of the Club.
In his time as Club Director, Cook has spearheaded the fundraising and events portfolio, and has been pivotal in strengthening the clubs historical ties with past players, members and supporters alike.
The Cook family name is synonymous with the Brown and Gold, with Greg’s father, the late Ron Cook, serving as Club President from 1980 -1987.
In welcoming Cook’s appointment Club President, The Hon. Jeff Kennett AC, acknowledged the enormous contribution Greg Cook had made to the Club in his time on the Board, and welcomed his promise as a key member of the Hawthorn management team, as the club continues to build towards an exciting future.
“Under Greg, the Club has been brought closer together through his numerous fundraising and charitable events. His decision to stand down from the Board to take up this exciting and challenging role within the Club, shows his commitment to grow the Club membership base, and continue to bring the Hawthorn Community closer together.”
Club Chief Executive, Ian Robson, was similarly encouraged, as the Club continues to grow both on and off the field.
“Greg has offered outstanding council in his time on the Board, and his addition to the Club’s senior management team is a measure of the caliber of professional that we are able to attract to the Club.
“He is a Hawthorn person, from a great Hawthorn family, and we look forward to the continued growth of membership and community under his leadership.”
Cook was most recently the National Events Manager of the Hogg Robinson Group, and has previously operated his own Sports Travel company. He brings to the Club a wealth of experience in business, and is excited by the challenges that lay ahead for him and his team as the Club continues to grow its presence in Victoria, Tasmania and around the country.
“The major challenge ahead of the Club is to target significant growth in its membership base. We have fantastic support around Australia – and now it’s time for those supporters to become members. Really, our destiny is in our own hands.” said Cook.
“I will be focusing on continuing to offer members better value for their membership with some great initiatives that will bring the Hawthorn business and supporter communities closer together. We are a club that has in the vicinity of 350,000 supporters and we currently have only around 10 percent of them as members. We need to close that gap.”
Cook will also oversee the establishment of the Hawks Museum at Waverley Park.
“I will be closely involved in the establishment of the Hawthorn Museum here at Waverley, as we seek to open the clubs rich history to its members and supporters, creating a place to come and reflect on the proud history of this great football club.”
Before joining the Board in 2002, Cook served on the committee of the coterie group, The Confreres. He grew up around Glenferrie Oval and is delighted to now be joining the team full-time in his capacity as General Manager of Membership and Community.
“There is not a day in my life that I don’t think about Hawthorn. It is part of my family. It is part of me. I feel in a physical sense as much as I do in a spiritual sense.
“Next to my family it is the most important thing in my life.”
