Reserves back in smashing form
After Reserves’ coach Brett Allison asked each player to assess their individual performances over the past few weeks before the game on Saturday, the Swans were back to their best posting a 146-point win over Tuggeranong at Ainslie in what was one of their best performances for 2007.
In the first term the Swans kept Tuggeranong to just one goal but kicked eight themselves while attacking the ball fiercely and winning the stoppages. At quarter time Sam Rowe had two goals while Jesse White, Sean Dempster, Kristin Thornton, Keiran Jack, Craig Bird and top-up player Luke Breust each kicked one.
The Swans’ ruckmen continued to dominate the ruck in the second quarter and once again the Swans kept Tuggeranong to just one goal and put themselves 65 points in front at half time, with goals to Monk, Matthew Davis, Luke Vogels and Lewis Roberts-Thomson.
In the third quarter the game increased in intensity and became more physical and the Swans piled on an additional seven goals after continuing to dominate the ruck. Tuggeranong were kept goalless. Jonathan Simpkin kicked two goals and Thornton, Jarred Moore, Matthew O’Dwyer, Earl Shaw and Rowe all kicked singles. At three quarter time the Swans Reserves were leading by 111 points.
In the last term the Swans finally allowed Tuggeranong some scoring shots and they kicked four goals, but with the extent of the Reserves’ lead and the nine goals they managed in the final term, Tuggeranong’s goals made no impact on the game. White and Moore each kicked two goals in the last quarter, both making it three for the game. Thornton and Simpkin also made it three with one goal each and O’Dwyer, Jack and Bird each kicked a single.
In the Swans’ best performance for a number of weeks Dempster was a standout and Thornton, who was drafted from Peel Thunder in 2005, was also impressive. Moore, Roberts-Thomson, Grundy and Rowe were also in the Swans’ best.
The Swans’ Reserves will want to continue their dominating form next week in the last game of the AFL Canberra home and away season.
They will play Belconnen at 9.50am on Sunday September 2 at the SCG. The game will be the curtain raiser for the Swans and Hawthorn game.
Belconnen are currently sitting second on the ladder and had a 148-point over Ainslie on Saturday.
