THE AFL'S aim of raising more than $1 million for victims of the Victorian bushfires has been achieved.
A final tally of $1.2 million was announced by the League soon after Friday night's NAB Cup Bushfire Appeal match, with that number including all gate receipts and match costs and $70,000 collected by players, coaches and volunteers outside the ground.
It also takes in a $300,000 donation from the AFL on behalf of the 16 clubs and $150,000 from the AFL Players' Association.
AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou confirmed that the League's contribution was on top of the donations already made by a number of clubs.
A crowd of 35,123 supporters attended Telstra Dome for the game between the Western Bulldogs and Essendon.
"Tonight was an opportunity for the football family to come together and show its support for the people affected by the bushfires," Demetriou said.
"Tonight’s match is our first and most immediate response but it is only the beginning and we will continue to work with local communities and local football clubs to help communities rebuild in the weeks and months ahead."
He thanked all AFL players and clubs for their involvement and said that other initiatives would be announced in the coming weeks and months.
The $1.2 million total does not include the money raised through the Red Cross call centre during the live broadcast.
