Tthe AFL Commission approved the grant at its monthly meeting on Monday and said the money would come from the AFL’s Facility Development Reserve (FDR).
The Commission approved Port Adelaide’s request on the basis the club had not undertaken significant work to its football facilities since it entered the competition in 1997.
The Power have been working with the SANFL in recent times to improve its overall financial position.
AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou said he had informed Port Adelaide CEO Mark Haysman of the decision.
“Port Adelaide has been working strongly to improve its overall financial status, with the help of the SANFL as its licence-holder, and it was appropriate for the AFL today to also make its contribution to assist the club,” Demetriou said.
“The Port Adelaide Board and its executive has been working very hard through a difficult situation and we are very confident the club is making significant headway off the field.”
