As the 2011 membership renewal begins, the membership department here at the Brisbane Lions are hearing from some die-hard supporters and the great stories they have.

One of our baby members, Ireland Morris, could well hold the record for the smallest Lions member in history!

Little Ireland was born in 2008 at just 25 weeks, weighing a mere 490 grams.

Proud Dad Mick immediately signed her up for membership to his beloved club.

“We signed her up a couple of weeks after she was born,” Mick Morris said.

“I’ve loved the Lions for 38 years now, back to the Fitzroy days, and I definitely wanted my little girl to be a Lion for life like me.”

Ireland’s premature birth meant that she was confined to a humidicrib for the first few weeks of her life. Humidicribs are used for infants who require isolation from infection and regulated temperature support.

This didn’t stop Mick from making sure she was a card-carrying member from day one.

“We had to get the nurses to sterilise her membership card - we couldn’t even hold her because she was in the humidicrib so everything that went in there had to be disinfected,” Mick said.

At just two years old, Ireland is still young and hasn’t made it out to any games just yet, but Mick hopes that one of the games in Victoria in season 2011 will be Ireland’s debut.
