A gala dinner and a commemorative match against Melbourne at the MCG on Easter Sunday next season will be the centerpieces of the LeasePlan Western Bulldogs’ plans to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1954 Footscray premiership victory.

Tickets are on sale now to an exclusive black tie dinner - at which the 14 living members of the team will be present – on 8 April at the Crown Palladium.

Then, three days later, the team will be recognized publicly on the MCG, the scene of their premiership triumph, before the Western Bulldogs round three game against Melbourne.

Fifty years earlier, Footscray defeated Melbourne by 51 points – 15.11.101 to 7.9.51- to win the Bulldogs first premiership since joining the VFL in 1925.

“Next year takes on extra special significance for the LeasePlan Western Bulldogs because it will be a season that commemorates our club’s greatest triumph,” said the LeasePlan Western Bulldogs chief executive, Campbell Rose.

“It is only fitting that we honor and celebrate the heroics of the 1954 Footscray premiership team accordingly and we will be doing this right throughout 2004,” said Rose. “It will be a part of everything that we do next year.”

“Apart from the gala dinner and the game against Melbourne there will be a number of activities and a few surprises for all Bulldog supporters to be a part of,” aid Rose.

This week, preparations for the gala dinner began with members of the team gathering in Melbourne to record a series of interviews that will be screened at the gala dinner.

“It will be a very special occasion to have our premiership team together again, in the one room, to reminisce and share their wonderful memories with generations of Bulldogs supporters,” said Rose.

“It will be a memorable evening for the team, their families and everyone that loves Footscray and the Western Bulldogs,” said Rose.
