Despite his recent good form there is another level to Bernie Vince’s game and the midfielder says it will come through increased fitness.

Vince was fantastic around the stoppages on Saturday and his 30 possessions included seven clearances and eight inside 50’s.

Vince made an effort in the pre-season to increase his work rate and stake his claim for a spot in the midfield.

“I wasn’t fit enough to play in the midfield, I could have little short spurts in there, but I wasn’t fit enough to play in there for long periods of time,” Vince said.

“ The end of last season I realised if I wanted to play in the midfield, which I wanted to, I had to work pretty hard in the pre-season and get my 3km time down to what some of the other guys were doing."

“Maybe not this year but next year in the off season I could step it up again and not just be happy with what I’ve done.

“Hopefully they can develop me even more and I’ll be able to run even harder and run out games even longer.”

Adelaide’s much talked about young brigade have lifted this season and Jericho, Maric and Porplyzia along with Vince were standouts on the weekend.

The likes of Knights, van Berlo and Mackay continue to take their performances to another level and Vince believes the self belief of the younger players has been encouraging.

“To be doing it the way we are and to be going so well as a young group has been very pleasing,” Vince said.

“I suppose the more games you play and the more performances you put on the board you get a lot more confidence out of it and we build on that this week.”

Saturday night’s clash against Hawthorn will be a big test after the disappointment of the Round 4 game in Launceston.

While Adelaide has identified several key areas of improvement Vince believes focusing on their offensive side of the game will be important.

“Last time I know our ruckman got first hand on it which gave us first look but I think we were a bit down on our clearances last time,” Vince said.

“Hopefully we can get first look at it and pretty much take them on in our offensive game as well. I think they are a pretty attacking side and if we really test them in that area that’s where we can really get an advantage."
