It was on the eve of the season in 2010 that North Melbourne midfielder Levi Greenwood sustained an injury that threatened to derail his plans for the early rounds of the year - the 22 year-old is now facing a similar fate.

Another year, another freak incident - this time it’s a badly sprained ankle.

“I thought I had broken my leg. It was that sore and I heard a crack as well,” Greenwood said of the innocuous hit which he took on Sunday while playing against Geelong in the opening round of the NAB Cup at Skilled Stadium.

Speaking exclusively to kangaroos.com.au, the rugged in-and-under ball winner says he prepared for a worst case scenario after an opposition player fell across his left leg.

“I thought I was going to look down and see that my leg was in two but luckily it wasn’t that bad.”

It’s taken Greenwood several days to watch the incident back on tape.

“I had a look on Thursday and it didn’t look that bad…obviously it turned out worse than what it looked like on television.”

In March 2010, Greenwood was attempting to put on a pair of track-suit pants while coming down the stairs at home when his big-toe got caught and twisted.

“I sort of slid down the stairs and banged it on the stairs as I fell. It swelled up and hurt quite a bit so I had scans and there was a small fracture there,” he said last year.

Unfortunately, the South Australian is on the injury list again.

“This time last year I had an injury to my big toe and I couldn’t play in round one…now it looks like I could be in the same situation again.

“It’s pretty annoying but I try not to think about it because you just get frustrated…you can’t control the uncontrollables. You just have to get on with it and focus on rehab, do everything right and get back as soon as possible.”

If he has the same attitude as he did in 2010, this latest mishap could bode well for the Kangaroos.

Greenwood had a breakout year finishing the season off with a career best 39 disposals against Melbourne at the MCG. He also had 7 marks and 6 tackles.

“I’m going to be pretty determined to get back. I see all the boys now ramping it up for season mode and I want to get out there with them.”
