MELBOURNE hopes Austin Wonaeamirri may be back training with the club in early December.

The forward returned to the Northern Territory earlier this month following the death of his father in a car crash on the Tiwi Islands.

Matthew Wonaeamirri's funeral will be held next week and assistant coach Josh Mahoney said the Demons would send a group to support the 22-year-old.

"Since we heard of the death of his father two weeks ago Austin's been away up in the Tiwi Islands and we as a club felt that was very important for him to go up there and to spend time with his family and friends and to go through the grieving process," Mahoney said.

"The funeral is on Monday and we'll be sending up a contingent of 15 people from the Melbourne footy club, including 11 players.

"It's a great sign of the unity of the footy club in that every player wanted to put their hand up and to go and in the end we had to knock back people."

The Demons will give Wonaeamirri whatever time he needs at home, but will encourage him to return to Melbourne next month to recommence his pre-season.

"We'll be trying to get Austin back as quick as we can after the funeral ... and then he'll be training hard, obviously with the support of the rest of the group," Mahoney said.

"[He'll] train for a little bit longer before Christmas to make sure that he gets the fitness levels that is required."
