Brendan Fevola is set to play his first official match with the Lions this Sunday when his new Club takes on the Western Bulldogs in the first round of the NAB Cup at Manuka Oval in Canberra.

Fevola headlines nine new faces that have been selected in the Lions’ preliminary squad of 29 players.

Brent Staker (West Coast), Andrew Raines (Richmond) and Amon Buchanan (Sydney) will also don Lions colours for the first time after moving to the Club during last year’s trade period.

Meanwhile, draftees Ryan Harwood and Jesse O’Brien together with rookies Josh Dyson, Claye Beams and Sean Yoshiura look likely to experience their first taste of senior AFL action.

Other new recruits including Xavier Clarke, Callum Bartlett, Matt Maguire, Bryce Retzlaff, Niall McKeever, Mitch Golby and Broc McCauley will have to wait at least another week before making their first on-field appearance with the Lions.

Captain Jonathan Brown, Vice-Captains Luke Power and Simon Black, Ash McGrath and Josh Drummond are among the most notable absentees from the list.

The squad will be trimmed to 26 players prior to the start of the match as pre-season rules provide both teams with access to six interchange players and two substitutes.

The match will commence at 4:40pm (local time) in Canberra and will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 2 in all states.

Should the Lions win, they will proceed to the second round of the pre-season knockout competition and face either Richmond or Hawthorn at Etihad Stadium on Friday 26 February.

Should the Lions lose, they will participate in a NAB Challenge practice match against either Sydney (at Blacktown) or Carlton (at Visy Park) on Friday 26 February.

FAST FOOTY FACTS
The merged Brisbane Lions are one of only three teams to have never won a pre-season competition together with the West Coast Eagles and Fremantle. However, the Club has won two pre-season premierships with Fitzroy in 1959 and 1978.

The Lions have twice made it through to the Grand Final of the pre-season competition since the 1997 merger - in 2001 against Port Adelaide and in 2007 against Carlton.

The Lions defeated St Kilda in their NAB Cup opener last year at Gold Coast Stadium before narrowly going down to Essendon in the second round of the elimination tournament at Etihad Stadium.

Lions Vice-Captain Luke Power has played more matches in the pre-season competition than any other current Lions player with 28, while new recruit Brendan Fevola ranks second with 26 pre-season games.

Lions full-forward Brendan Fevola has booted the second-most goals in the history of the AFL pre-season competition with a total of 98 (including three nine-point super goals). He remains 18 goals shy of former Hawthorn champion Jason Dunstall's record of 116 goals in the pre-season competition.

Fevola also holds the record for most goals in an official pre-season match with 12 goals for Carlton against Collingwood back in 2000.
