Buoyed by the return of key senior players including Simon Black and Luke Power, the Brisbane Lions secured their first win of the pre-season against Melbourne at Visy Park on Saturday.

The Lions trailed by four points at quarter time but set themselves up with a six-goal second term to run out comfortable 31-point winners.

While Black and Power were influential in the result, Lions Senior Coach Michael Voss said he was delighted with the even contribution from each of his 25 players.

Former Rising Star Daniel Rich continued his blistering pre-season form with a best-on-ground performance and was ably assisted by the likes of Ash McGrath, Jed Adcock, Jack Redden, Tom Rockliff, Joel Patfull and Mitch Clark.

But it was some of the lesser-likes that most impressed Voss post-game.

“I thought some of our younger players played critical roles today,” Voss said.

“Guys like Rohan Bewick, Tom Collier, Claye Beams, Jesse O’Brien, Sam Sheldon and Ryan Lester were all really important.”

“The there’s Broc McCauley who has been heading up our ruck department this pre-season and doing a great job. Today he matched it against an AFL All-Australian ruckman in Mark Jamar.”

“We walk away from this game with a bit more of an education,” he said.

The Lions dominated possession throughout the match and shared the scoring with seven multiple goal-kickers - Power (3 goals), Clark (2), Bewick (2), Beams (2), Polkinghorne (2), Rockliff (2) and O’Brien (2).

The other single goal-scorer was Lester who again showed promising signs up forward before being substituted for Bryce Retzlaff at half time.

A win was just the tonic the Lions - and their members and supporters - needed to regain some confidence heading into the season.

“Until today, we’ve never really had a lot of our systems together,” Voss said.

“Now we can walk away feeling like our systems are in place and that we have achieved something.”

“It’s important to get a win for the team’s confidence.”

The Lions will face new AFL neighbours the Gold Coast next Sunday at Southport in their final pre-season hitout, although Captain Jonathan Brown may still be an unlikely starter.

Brown is recovering from an infected knee, but is certain to be available for the team’s season opener against Fremantle.

Defender Josh Drummond, ruckman Matthew Leuenberger and forward Todd Banfield are among the other possible inclusions.
