We recap the Saturday results in the NAB League Boys Round 5: 

 

Sandringham v Brisbane

The Sandringham Dragons put together a solid four quarter performance to defeat the Brisbane Lions Academy by 97 points. With 13 individual goal kickers the Dragons were able to put plenty of scoreboard pressure on, kicking 19.18 from 58 inside 50’s. Louis Butler was a key ball winner collecting a game-high 30 disposals. The Dragon’s Blake O’Leary was damaging in the forward half with three majors to his name. For the Lions, it was Will Martyn who led the way recording 24 disposals, four tackles and three inside 50’s.

 

Sydney Swans v Murray

The Sydney Swans Academy were able to run away 24-point winners over the Murray Bushrangers in a game where they led all day. Hamish Ellem had a day out for the Swans, collecting 21 disposals and recording six shots-at-goal, kicking a game-high three goals. Cameron Wild and Dylan Clarke were busy around the coal face for the Bushrangers collecting 26 and 22 disposals respectively. Wild was able to send it inside 50 seven times and kick one major. Samuel Thorne worked extremely hard for the Swans, without the ball in hand, laying a game-high 10 tackles.

 

Dandenong v Oakleigh

The Dandenong Stingrays were able to record an outstanding 70-point win over the Oakleigh Chargers. It was a tightly contested first quarter with the home team taking a one-point advantage but from that point on, it was all the Stingrays, recording 23 shots-at-goal and kicking 17 goals to six. Dandenong’s Ned Cahill was outstanding collecting 24 disposals and kicking three majors. Lachlan Williams also contributed kicking three goals. For the visitors it was Fraser Elliot who stood tall, recording 14 disposals, five tackles and one goal.

 

Bendigo v Northern Knights

The Northern Knights were able to record their first win of the 2019 season, overcoming the Bendigo Pioneers by five points. It was a close contest for the whole game, with the Knights able to kick two final term goals to hold onto the lead. Joshua D’Intinosante had an outstanding game collecting a game-high 29 disposals, five tackles and kicking one goal. He was well supported by Sunny Brazier who slotted two majors, laid eight tackles and gathered 22 disposals. James Schischka was Bendigo’s best player recording a team-high 25 disposals, two marks and two tackles.

 

GWS v Gippsland

The Gippsland Power were able to overcome a fast finishing GWS Giants team coming away with a nine-point win. After the Power took a 22-point lead into the main break it was the Giants who fought back bringing the margin back to a solitary behind before the Power were able to kick a goal after the siren to confirm the win. Harry Grant was exceptional for the Giants recording 30 disposals, seven tackles, six inside 50’s and two goals. It was a collective effort from Harrison Pepper and Riley Baldi for the Power in the midfield, with Pepper finding the ball 27 times and Baldi able to record 22 disposals and two majors.

 

Eastern v Gold Coast

The Eastern Ranges recorded a commanding 59-point win over the Gold Coast Academy. It was a game of two-halves with only three goals kicked in the first two quarters. The Ranges were able to control the third quarter kicking seven unanswered goals, with Jamieson Rossiter and Bailey White kicking two and three goals respectively in the third term. Connor Budarick fought hard all day for the Suns, laying a game-high 12 tackles. He was the Suns best ball winner gathering 24 disposals and five inside 50’s.  

 

Calder v Geelong

The Cannons were able to record a seven-point win in a see-sawing affair against the Geelong Falcons. It could’ve been a more comfortable margin with inaccuracy hurting the Cannons kicking 8.11 from 37 inside 50’s. Brodie Newman was outstanding for the Cannons amassing a game-high 34 disposals, three tackles and five marks. He was well supported by teammate Ned Gentile who collected 21 disposals and slotted three majors. Wil Batson was a solid contributor for the Falcons recording 21 touches and kicking one goal. He was supported by Charlie Sprague who kicked two goals to go with 17 disposals.

 

Tasmania vs Western Jets

The Jets led at every break, eventually defeating Tasmania by 47 points. Darcy Cassar was seemingly everywhere as he went on to collect 31 disposals, including 27 kicks, 13 marks, two inside 50’s and eight rebounds 50’s. Of his six scoring shots, Archi Manton was a strong target forward kicking three goals. Tasmania played more of a running game than their opponent winning the handball count by 48 which was led by Oliver Burrows-Cheng with 16 of his own. Patrick Walker of the Devils did his best to repel the attacking efforts of the Jets with a game high 13 rebound 50’s.

 

GWV Rebels vs Northern Territory

It was a one-sided affair in the game between GWV Rebels and Northern Territory, the Rebels eventually coming out on top by 55 points. The Rebels had multiple attacking options forward with six players kicking multiple goals – led by Nick Caris kicking four goals. Collecting 28 disposals, 12 inside 50’s and two goals - Matt Lloyd once again was dominant for the Rebels. Despite the loss Beau O’Connell played a great game, along with his two goals, he also collected 29 disposals and seven inside 50’s. Tyson Woods of the Thunder played an efficient game forward with five scoring shots, including three goals, from his eight disposals.
