THE WESTERN Bulldogs will replace its Darwin fixture with a home game in Cairns against Gold Coast next season.

The Dogs, who have played nine games in the Top End since 2004, ended their association with the Northern Territory this year.

Richmond finished its three-year agreement with Cairns this season and made it clear the club wasn't keen on extending it after returning just one win.

The Suns will return to the region for the fourth straight year for the round 17, Saturday afternoon match.

While the Dogs maintain their aim is to play their home games in Victoria, CEO Simon Garlick said the Cairns opportunity gave the club a good chance to continue the AFL's association with far north Queensland.

"While we will continue to work towards bringing all home fixtures back to Victoria, we are really pleased to be playing a home game in Cairns, and to be part of the AFL's continued growth in North Queensland in 2014," Garlick said.

"On balance, we have determined that it was in the club's interests to host an interstate match in 2014, and we look forward to playing in front of new and old Bulldog fans alike."

The full AFL fixture will be released on Thursday morning at 9.30am AEDT on AFL.com.au.

AFL general manager broadcasting, scheduling and major projects Simon Lethlean said a match in northern Queensland was "extremely important for the long-term development of the code and taking matches to fans who cannot access traditional capital city areas".

He also said the featuring of the improved Bulldogs and Suns would provide an entertaining contest for the region.

"The Bulldogs showed tremendous late-season form in 2013 and their meeting with the Suns – a young team also on the rise – will be a keen test of the development of both clubs as they build towards competing for finals positions," Lethlean said.
