IN A SEASON that has seen more lows than highs for Port Adelaide, the form of Tom Logan has been a rare constant.

The versatile former Brisbane Lion racked up 19 games in 2008, his best senior year to date. Along the way he had a broad range of roles which he believes have improved his football.

For a couple of weeks, the 183cm Logan even bobbed up as the starting centre half-forward.

“I’ve been playing all over the ground which has been good and important for me.  I’d never really played at half-back before, and towards the end of the season that was my main position.

“But I’ve played half-forward, forward pocket, back pocket, on the wing and on the ball. Playing in all those areas has been a great experience. I think I’m naturally an on-baller, and I’ve been doing tagging roles too. As long as I am in the 22 each week, I’m quite happy to play wherever they want.”

Playing as a midfielder against North Melbourne, Logan was one of the players who got Port Adelaide back into the contest after being on the back foot early.

“In the first five minutes of the game, they came out of the blocks and took it right up to us. But we got together and said we had to play man-on-man. We would have won the clearances overall and 'Broges' (Dean Brogan) in the ruck was outstanding. Peter Burgoyne, who had 45 touches, was just fantastic.”

Logan is a far different footballer to the man who crossed from Brisbane to Port Adelaide at the end of 2005.

“In Brisbane, my confidence was down and I was a bit worried about going out and making mistakes, whereas here 'Choco' and the coaches say to just get out and play my game and run all day. If you make a mistake, just make sure you don’t do it again.”

In his two years in Brisbane, Logan only played three senior games.

“I was probably injured for about a year out of the two years. I didn’t play much footy, but since I’ve been at Port, I’ve learned so much. The coaches are like teachers. I’ve still got a lot to learn – that’s what pre-season is for, to improve me as a player and improve my game.”

Logan is quick to stand up for the Port coaching staff.

“It’s been a hard year for the coaches because there has been a lot of media pressure on them, but they have been fantastic and we are excited about next year.”

The big win over North can only have a good effect on the side.

“It was fantastic to go out there and win, but you sit down and say 'where has that been all year?'. It’s the best we played all season. Why does it have to come in Round 22? But we go into pre-season excited and knowing we came off two good wins, and we will be expecting to make the finals next year.

“Today we had a few boys that have played under 10 games, and it's more experience for them.”
