Lions Academy Head Coach

The Brisbane Lions A.F.C, arguably the AFL's most successful team and brand over the last decade, is seeking to appoint a talented and dedicated full-time Lions Academy Head Coach to become a key member of the Academy and Football Operations Department. The Brisbane Lions A.F.C has diverse service offerings, an ever increasing profile and strong brand.

Reporting to the National Talent Manager and in collaboration with the Academy Manager, the primary role of the Lions Academy Head Coach is to select, prepare and coach the various Academy squads in a manner which optimises player performance and individual development. This is achieved through adherence to clearly documented processes, and in line with the agreed talent strategy of the Lions Coaching framework. This exciting role has four key areas of responsibility which include:

• Academy Coaching - to build technical skills, fitness levels and capability of Academy squads and providing open and honest feedback to parents, players and club coaches in relation to performance, direction and development. This includes mentoring and educating players on their responsibilities around Club representation;
• Talent Management - to assist in the selection and development of Academy members though attending activities and identifying talent;
• Leadership, Culture and People - be a role model of team behaviour and standards both on and off the field through provision of leadership to players and staff. This includes contributing positively to establishing and maintaining team spirit and values; and
• Stakeholder Engagement and Management - establishing and maintaining positive professional working relationships with all stakeholders including but not limited to umpires, AFL officials, media representatives, Lions Football department and other staff members.

The ideal candidate will possess leadership qualities and have strong development focus, with the desire and ability to teach and mentor teenage boys. You will be personable with well-developed communication and interpersonal skills to be able to interact effectively and productively with people of all ages ranging from 12 years old, to parents and fellow coaches. You must be motivated to contribute to and celebrate others’ success, and be flexible and adaptable to be able to cope with changing circumstances.

Previous experience in youth or senior coaching, as well as extensive experience playing, is necessary.
A minimum Level 2 AFL Coaching Accreditation is essential; Level 3 Coaching and/or Human Movement or Education degrees are favourable. You must demonstrate a high level of elite junior football knowledge as well as an understanding of the AFL talent pathway. You must possess sound IT knowledge, particularly of Microsoft Office suite and ideally Skill Analysis software, as well as a Blue Card.

A competitive salary package including a car is on offer for the successful candidate. Due to the nature of the industry and role, hours are irregular and travel within the Lions Academy zone, as well as some interstate travel, is required. You must be flexible in your approach in order to conduct out of hours training sessions and observe potential AFL talent.
