The Dees receive Carlton's No.11 pick in exchange for McLean, who played 94 games since being selected with Melbourne's first-round pick in the 2003 NAB AFL Draft.
List manager Tim Harrington said Melbourne would hold onto the No.11 pick, rather than using it as collateral in a possible subsequent trade.
He added the club will also keep No.1, No.2 and No.18, meaning the Demons at this stage, enters the Draft with four picks in the top 18.
"That's our plan," he said. "The deal was very clean - Brock for 11.
"We're happy that we're rebuilding the club and get ourselves some prime picks in the draft."
Harrington is also hopeful of gaining an uncontracted player through the NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft. But he believes Port Adelaide's Shaun Burgoyne and Bulldog Brian Lake will not be available for the Demons in December.
"Yes, that's part of our strategy. Obviously we have to keep that fairly close to our chest," he said.
Harrington is also optimistic forward Brad Miller will soon re-sign.
