WEST Coast will approach the 2010 NAB Cup as it has for the past four years, with a focus on managing players through to round one of the Toyota AFL Premiership Season rather than chasing pre-season wins, coach John Worsfold says.

After finishing runner-up to Carlton in 2005, West Coast has been bowled out of the pre-season competition in the first round for four consecutive years, with Collingwood trouncing an inexperienced Eagles side by 62 points in the opening round last year.

Worsfold's men open the NAB Cup against Essendon on February 12, and the coach said he would again take a rest and manage policy into the competition.

"There's always other things we have to weigh up," Worsfold said from West Coast's community camp in Mandurah on Thursday.

"[Winning] is not a high priority. It's about what we want to get out of the five weeks we have left before the season starts.

"It's a bit more of that long-term planning about how we're going to bring them (the players) through."

While not selecting the best available side for the NAB Cup, Worsfold is set to throw added responsibility to young ruckman Nic Naitanui for at least the first two rounds of the pre-season competition.

"I would expect that if Coxy's available for the second NAB Cup he won't do a massive amount of ruck work, so Nic will probably do the bulk of it in the first couple," Worsfold said.

"He's a lot fitter and a lot stronger than he was last year, so we expect that he'll be able to perform at a higher level."

Naitanui starred in West Coast's intra-club hit-out on Wednesday night alongside young midfielders Chris Masten, Luke Shuey and Brad Ebert.

Worsfold said he wasn't surprised to see the highly rated youngsters excel and Shuey and Ebert were now possible selections for the Essendon clash.

There is also healthy competition in the Eagles' backline, with formidable Brisbane Lions forwards Jonathan Brown and Brendan Fevola looming in round one of the season proper.

Will Schofield and Beau Wilkes filled the key defensive posts alongside captain Darren Glass in Wednesday's intra-club, but Worsfold said Matt Spangher would get his chance against Essendon with Mitch Brown and Eric Mackenzie to come into the side a week later.

With centre half-forward Josh Kennedy coming into the side for the Essendon clash, Quinten Lynch and Ash Hansen are also competing for the full-forward role.

Hansen booted two goals in West Coast's intra-club hit-out and set up another two, but Worsfold said Lynch, who had a quiet night, was wary of a hamstring he injured two weeks prior.

"He wasn't quite as sharp as he would normally be (and) Ash is probably more up and going," Worsfold said.

"Ash had more of an impact on the game, but that's what footy's about. Ash wants to play next week and he wants to grab that spot, as 'Lynchy' does. So we've got that decision to make over the next week."
