COLLINGWOOD captain Nick Maxwell says teammate Travis Cloke isn’t the type to walk out on the club and is confident the young centre half forward will remain at with the Pies beyond 2010.

Cloke is among a host of players being linked to the Gold Coast as the competition’s 17th club readies itself to enter the AFL next year.

In preparation for its inaugural season, Gold Coast recruiters are hitting up player managers of some of the brightest stars in the game.

Cloke, who is managed by his father and former Collingwood star David, is out of contract with Collingwood at the end of this year.

The Gold Coast is reluctant to name names in its mission to sign established stars but it is likely to have the 23-year-old firmly in its sights.

However, Maxwell has faith his teammate will reject a potentially more lucrative offer to move north to remain in the black and white.

“I’m very confident that that he’ll stay,” Maxwell told afl.com.au.

“I haven’t spoken to him but I think that [with] someone like him, you see how much work they put in and how hard they work, they’re not sort of someone who’s going to leave and jump ship.

“You can just tell, he’s a Collingwood person. He’s got a lot of strong alliances with the club, so I couldn’t see him going anywhere.”

Maxwell said the Pies weren’t paying much attention to speculation regarding Cloke’s ongoing contract negotiations but were instead focusing on their 2010 aspirations.

The Collingwood skipper said he also hadn’t spoken to the centre half-forward but emphasised his importance to the club.

“It’s sort of a strange period with two new clubs coming in,” Maxwell said.

“It’s not often that happens, so I think you just let that stuff go through to the keeper and just concentrate on what we can control and that is playing footy this year.

“Trav is another guy who we see as a leader … it’s important that your centre half-forward, your key forward, can really set up what you need in front of you - make sure the structures are all set up and done right, so he’s someone we rely heavily upon with that.”

Travis Cloke is a $350,100 forward in this year's Toyota AFL Dream Team.
