Lions defender Sam Sheldon has been charged by the AFL’s Match Review Panel with a first offence for making negligent contact with an umpire (Matt Stevic) during the first quarter of the match between the Brisbane Lions and Essendon last Saturday.

Sheldon can accept a $900 sanction with an early plea.

A first offence for making negligent contact with an umpire is a $1200 sanction. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to a $900 sanction.

In other Match Review news, the panel has determined that contact between Ash McGrath and Essendon’s Mark McVeigh was not reportable.

The Match Review Panel said “McGrath and McVeigh were running towards a loose ball when the ball hit McVeigh’s leg and richocheted into McGrath’s left leg. McGrath tried to kick the ball with his right leg and missed, making contact with McVeigh. It was the view of the panel that McGrath was attempting to contest the ball and his actions were not reportable.”
