PORT Adelaide coach Mark Williams has hinted veteran Peter Burgoyne could announce his retirement from AFL football this week and, if that does happen, he may be given a farewell game.

A virus made Burgoyne unavailable for selection for Saturday night's clash with the Brisbane Lions; a match his side lost by 15 points.

The result means next Saturday night's fixture against North Melbourne at AAMI Stadium might be the Power's last for 2009 and Williams confirmed the 31-year-old would be considered for it.

"You only get one chance to retire people properly," Williams said after the Power's defeat.

"[He is] a premiership player and just an outstanding player for our club.

"You would like to think that if he got the opportunity you would give him the send off he deserves."

Burgoyne, an inaugural squad member of the Power, has played 14 games in an indifferent season that has seen him spend more time in the midfield.

He was dropped to the SANFL for a month from round 16 but fought back to earn a recall for last Sunday's loss to Carlton.

He has played 239 games since his 1997 debut and, despite his form struggles this year, remains one of Port Adelaide's best contributors.
