ST KILDA full-forward Fraser Gehrig is fighting to return to senior action after undergoing hand surgery earlier this month.

Gehrig, 32, has been out on the track with his teammates in Moorabbin, doing group training and ball work while wearing a protective guard on his middle finger.

Gehrig is currently on St. Kilda’s long term injury list.

Saints football manager Matthew Drain said he is reluctant to put a date on the G-train’s return to action.

"It’s not about a time frame," he told the Herald Sun.

"It’s when he and the coaching staff and the medical staff feel he’s ready to go."

Drain said the club was happy with Gehrig’s progress so far, with medical staff looking at new ways to manage the arthritis in his hands.

"We’ve been pleased with the progress he has made post-surgery. He’s one of the hardest workers and the most determined and he’s an inspiration to the younger guys.

"He’s working closely with the medical staff on ways to better manage his hands. It’s too early to say exactly where he’s at, but he’s making every effort to get back."
