RETIRED Richmond premiership player Shaun Grigg will extend his career in the AFL – as a development coach at Geelong.

Grigg, who played 214 games over 13 seasons for Carlton and Richmond, was a part of the Tigers' drought-breaking flag in 2017.

The 31-year-old was forced to retire earlier this year after battling knee and hip injuries, opening the door for the mid-season recruitment of Grand Final hero Marlion Pickett.

Geelong's general manager of football Simon Lloyd described Grigg as a quality leader who had helped young players.

"Now as he enters his post-playing career he can devote himself full-time to working with young players as they grow in the AFL environment," Lloyd said.

"He is a high-quality person and we believe he will enjoy a long career in coaching."

Grigg said he was looking forward to bringing something different to Geelong and working with the club’s young players.

"Having a quick look and playing against them (Geelong’s young players), they’ve got a lot of good young talent," he said.

"Hopefully I can teach them a little bit and fast track their development to bridge that gap so they can come up and play good senior footy.

"I love footy and to be around footy clubs, it’s a special thing, so when the opportunity came up to pursue it (coaching) and have a crack at it, I was absolutely rapt and grateful for the chance."

Grigg will begin at the Cats in November.
