FORMER Hawthorn captain Shane Crawford has raised more than $450,000 for Breast Cancer Network Australian (BCNA) with his ultra marathon walk from Adelaide to Melbourne.

The Brownlow medallist ended his 12-day journey at Channel Nine on Thursday night after passing through more than 80 country towns.

An emotional Crawford said on The Footy Show the 780km experience, called ‘That’s What I’m Walkin’ About’, had been life changing.

“It was the whole journey, meeting a lot of people along the way who have been affected, some who have lost their mothers and partners,” he said.

“We did this to create awareness and raise as much money as we possibly could for BCNA.

“I thought not playing football anymore, I could actually get out and do something about it and thought, ‘Why not go for a little jog?’”

Crawford met survivors and people touched by breast cancer throughout his trip and was often moved to tears by their stories.

He was welcomed into Channel Nine by a guard of honour made up of survivors of the disease that is expected to affect 14,000 Australian women this year.

“Speaking to all the girls at the lunch we had before I took off, they said I’d be surprised at all the support I’d get along the way,” he said.

“I was blown away by it. All the country towns were unbelievable.”

Donations can still be made through the BCNA website at bcna.org.au or Crawford’s fundraising page at everydayhero.com.au/thatswhatimwalkinabout.

Crawford’s effort comes on the back of the AFL’s Field of Women from round seven this year where the MCG was turned into a sea of pink as 14,000 people flooded the ground in pink ponchos.

Over $900,000 was raised from the event, which was staged before the Melbourne v Western Bulldogs clash.
