FORMER Geelong and North Melbourne defender Leigh Colbert said on Tuesday he was keeping an open mind about the West Coast Eagles’ offer of a coaching position at the club.

Colbert held a part time coaching role with the club last year but has spent season 2008 working as a boundary rider on Fox Sports’ coverage of AFL.

Colbert briefly met with John Worsfold last weekend and the West Coast Eagles’ coach has said he was hopeful that the club could acquire the services of the former player he described as “an outstanding young man”.

However Colbert said he was trying to weigh up a range of career options, including one as a commercial pilot.

“I’ve got a commercial pilot’s licence," he said.

"I’ve been flying for 10 years, so I’ve got to either decide that I want to make a career out of flying or go into a coaching role, or continue to be involved in the media. At the moment it’s really just having a chat to see where I’m at."

Colbert said he hadn’t spoken to any other clubs about a coaching role and that John Worsfold had not put a time limit on his decision. However he admitted that his time with the Eagles last year wouldn’t discourage him from getting involved on a permanent basis.

“I was based in Melbourne and attended their games here," Colbert said.

"It was great. It gave me a real insight, not only into coaching, but the West Coast Football Club.

"They’re a terrific club with an exceptional coach. I have so much respect for him (Worsfold) and I totally understand why a person like Michael Voss wants to join the team because he’s an incredible guy and someone I have so much respect for not only as a coach but as a person as well.”

However if Colbert decides that a career in aviation is for him, he’s also open minded about where he’d like to work.

“A job in an airline would be terrific but having said that a job working privately for Richard Pratt or Solomon Lew would be good too,” he said.
