CARLTON defender Jarrad Waite's appeal to play in Saturday night's clash with Geelong has failed, consigning him to the sidelines for the one week he was offered.

Waite argued that his high contact on Fremantle's Chris Mayne came after he leapt in an attempt to block the forward's handball.

The AFL Tribunal saw the case differently, ruling that his action was negligent and enough to be deemed a strike.

Eighty demerit points was all the charge carried, however, Waite had 93.75 existing points which pushed him into suspension territory.

All other charges laid on Monday were accepted, with the most notable being that of Hawthorn skipper Sam Mitchell.

Mitchell’s decision to cop a reprimand and 93.75 demerit points for tripping Melbourne’s Simon Buckley means while he is free to take on the Western Bulldogs at Aurora Stadium on Saturday, he is now ineligible to win the Brownlow Medal.

Fremantle captain Matthew Pavlich and Demon Nathan Jones both accepted fines for making negligent contact with umpires in the weekend's matches.
