DANIEL Wells and Corey Jones have been ruled out of North Melbourne's side to play Essendon at Docklands on Sunday.

Wells has had an indifferent start the season and coach Dean Laidley said he had carried a hip injury for two weeks.

"It's not disastrous, it's only small," Laidley said from Arden Street on Thursday. "Some people can play with injuries and probably some people can't.

"We've decided that until he's 100 per cent fit we'll rest him."

However, Laidley said the injury did not absolve Wells for his poor early-season form.

"Once you go across the line you flag yourself as being fit [and] there are no excuses," he said.

"Everyone's entitled to a bad game, but there are certain things you need to make sure that you're still up and about – in your body language and you do all the team stuff like chase and tackle.

"We need to make sure he keeps improving in that area."

It seems a tougher predicament for Jones, who played at half-forward in the 54-point loss to Hawthorn last week after starting the year at VFL level.

Jones has failed to recapture the form that made him such an important player throughout the 2007 season when he kicked 46 goals.

"It is make or break where we're he's at, where we're at and where he is in his career," Laidley said.

"His form's been pretty good in the VFL in the last month, but [it] probably wasn't so flash on the weekend. When you come in you need to perform. He didn't perform the way we would have liked, but we're backing him 100 per cent.

"I met with him yesterday. He's going to work on some stuff and the coaches are going to work on some stuff with him so he can still be a player who contributes."

David Hale is progressing well after receiving a heavy knock against the Hawks, but will still undergo a fitness test later in the week along with draftee Jack Ziebell (back) and utility Leigh Harding (knee).

Twenty-year-old forward Ben Warren will make his debut against the Bombers and may be one of up to four inclusions.

Laidley conceded that the 'Boris' video scandal continued to affect his players.

"Let's talk in realities. It's still there," he said. "They've been a pretty fragile group.

"As late as Monday or Tuesday we were still moving forward and it's not going to take a week or two weeks, I imagine it's going to take a while.

"It’s had a draining effect on everyone physically and mentally, but we’ll move on."
