BRISBANE utility Sam Mayes could be on the move despite having a year to run on his contract.

Mayes is keen to explore his options in search of greater opportunities after playing just six senior games this season.

The Lions are understood to be open to a trade.

The 24-year-old is keen to return to South Australia but hasn't shut the door on a move elsewhere if that gives him the best opportunity of playing regularly.

After finishing fifth in Brisbane's 2017 best and fairest, Mayes had a poor first month this season, was dropped, and struggled to get another look-in.

He played six games in total.

Playing off half-back, Mayes is in a part of the ground where Brisbane is well stocked.

Alex Witherden had a fine second season, finishing runner-up in the NAB Rising Star award, while Daniel Rich, Nick Robertson and Allen Christensen also found homes in the backline.

Brisbane believes Mayes – taken eighth overall in the 2012 NAB AFL Draft – is good enough to rise again and would only consider allowing a move if the offer was suitable.

At 189cm and 88kg, Mayes started his career as a forward but moved to the wing before finding a home in defence.

He could be an option for Port Adelaide, which could be in need for an outside midfielder to replace North Melbourne-bound Jared Polec.
