FORWARD Jay Schulz says the season opener against Collingwood at Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon will be a good indication of where Port Adelaide sits among the competition this season.

The Power will start a new chapter in their history against the Magpies this weekend in Matthew Primus' first official game as coach.

Primus has instigated several changes since taking over from long-serving mentor Mark Williams, including a more defensive and direct style of play and a youth-first approach to selection.

The changes were effective in the Power's pre-season wins over an undermanned Geelong and inexperienced Greater Western Sydney, but Schulz said the new game plan would be put to the ultimate test against the reigning day and night premiers.

"We've got a new coach, new structure and pretty much a new team," Schulz said on Monday.

"It's a big test for us to see where we're at, if what we've done over pre-season [has worked] and if we're around the mark. I think a lot of things will come out on the weekend about a lot of teams.

"As long as we're as competitive as we can be I'm sure we'll be in with a chance."

Port Adelaide will have nearly a full list to choose from for its opening-round clash with Collingwood.

Underdone defender Jacob Surjan is likely to spend at least one more week in the SANFL before being considered for AFL selection, while Brett Ebert could also struggle to convince selectors he's ready to play, after a few weeks on the sidelines with tonsillitis.

Impressive rookie Jarrad Irons is expected to be elevated to the senior list in place of injured ruckman Matthew Lobbe this week and is a chance to make his debut against the Magpies.

Untried defenders Jasper Pittard and Cam O'Shea are also in the selection mix.

Collingwood will be without skipper Nick Maxwell, as he continues to recover from internal bleeding sustained in the NAB Cup semi-final.
