The Hawks Museum unveiled a new exhibition honouring the 1961 premiership as part of the Club’s Five Decades of Flags celebrations.

The memorabilia on display was kindly loaned by ‘61 premiership players and families and has seldom been seen by the public.

Memorabilia on display includes guernseys worn by ’61 players Ian Mort, John Winneke, Jack Cunningham and Ian Law (Hawthorn’s best and fairest player in ‘61) along with boots worn by Brendan Edwards (best on ground in the ‘61 premiership team).

A centrepiece of the display is the Weg Hawk that was carried out before the '61 Grand Final by the Bugle Squad - a group of supporters who brought bugles and trumpets along to the match, playing various renditions of the Club song.

Also to be seen are trophies and medallions won by Ron Nalder, Garry Young, Col Youren, Morton Browne, Jack Cunningham, Ian Mort and Brendan Edwards.

The display’s storyboard highlights two photos of the '61 team - the original taken 50 years ago, and a second taken in 2010 when the surviving members of the team reunited for a series of interviews at Waverley Park.

The two photos are available in postcards and are available for purchase, visit HawksNest Online.

The Hawks Museum will be releasing Gold n’ Brown - the Story of the ’61 Hawks during August at a special luncheon where all surviving ’61 players will be in attendance.

The book comes with a DVD complete with interviews and filmed highlights from the game.
