Spelly: Hi Thomo, welcome to the chat site. Who do you think you will pick up this week in the match against the Hawks?

Andrew Thompson: Good question! - maybe Lekkas or Crawford, but haven't had the meeting yet, so I’m not too sure.

Milne: Thomo, with your recent form not on par with your best, have you been working harder at training to try and regain form?

Andrew Thompson: No, not up to my usual standard, but I haven't spent much time on the ball, so I’m not getting as much of it.

Debra_Messing: You seem to have really improved your tackling in the last couple of years. Do you agree, and what do you put that improvement down to?

Andrew Thompson: I think it's always been an important part of my game - I’ve tried to focus on it more this year because I haven't been getting as much of the ball, and we've been doing a lot of work on it at training.

churinga: Evening Thomo, has Grant emphasised the ‘1%ers’ all week?

Andrew Thompson: It's a major focus every week. Collingwood probably got on top of us early last week, so there will be a concerted effort in that area this week.

Guest95470: Do you think that Milney is an overrated footballer?

Andrew Thompson: Definitely not, he's been an outstanding member of the team since he was promoted from the rookie list.

saintsgal: Hi Thomo, how did the players react to the sacking of Matt?

Andrew Thompson: We were surprised at the meeting on Tuesday morning - it was the first time we heard about it.

bratsaint: Hello Thomo, how are the children?

Andrew Thompson: Fantastic, but I’ve only got one! He's 7 months old and he's great.

Joffa: Thomo, how's Hamill looking for the big game, will he get over his injury in time to play?

Andrew Thompson: He trained very well today and should be no worries to play on Sunday.

Joffa: Thomo, who was your football idol growing up, and who did you barrack for?

Andrew Thompson: I barracked for Melbourne and Robert Flower was my idol.

Milne: Thomo, where do you think Fraser Gehrig will be played at this week, after our poor showing in defence last week?

Andrew Thompson: I’d say he'd probably start down forward but will be used as an option down back if required.

Spelly: Our 'clash' guernsey has created much interest with the media and supporters in the last couple of weeks. Do you, as a player, find it an advantage?

Andrew Thompson: It definitely helps on the field. It’s very bright; I reckon we could use it against some other clubs too, such as Carlton. Only problem is we've never won a game wearing it!

Guest95470: Do you think that Milne will ever play on the ball? In his junior days down at Knox he played on the ball – he was never really a forward pocket.

Andrew Thompson: I think he has the ability to play on the ball, but he's probably one of the best goal sneaks in the competition. We have a lot of players who can play on the ball, so it probably suits the team to have him forward.

Joffa: Has Robert Flower ever given you any pointers in the game - have you ever met him?

Andrew Thompson: I met him a couple of years ago but I’ve never really spoken to him about football, only briefly. I wouldn't mind having his skills though!

russdoig: How’s Max's injury coming along? Do you think we struggled without him against Collingwood, and was a large factor for the amount of marks Tarrant took?

Andrew Thompson: Definitely, Max hasn't really been beaten playing this year; he would have been a likely candidate to take Tarrant. I reckon Tarrant would have been pretty excited to see Max do his hammy against Freo.

churinga: Thomo, how hard is it for the medical team/coaches to ease youngsters like Ball, Goddard etc through the wet, winter games so they don't burn out, lose confidence and form?

Andrew Thompson: It's something they have to keep their eye on, but the fitness staff are very aware of how tough it is to play a full season in the AFL. When I first started, the length of the season wasn't really taken into account, young players are much better looked after now.

Joffa: What is the key to beating the Hawks this week?

Andrew Thompson: Probably make sure we use the ball well going in to the forward line. We have to get on top in the midfield because that is their strength. We have to be accountable because if they are allowed to run they will cut us up and hit targets easily.

Milne: What's your view on the umpires bouncing the ball?

Andrew Thompson: I don't think they should bounce the ball.

Spelly: Thomo, our accuracy in front of goal has been very disappointing ... have the players in question concentrated on this during training this week?

Andrew Thompson: We've done a lot more set shots at training, we were good in that area last year, but it's a skill we need to keep working on.

bratsaint: Do you get a buzz from doing Saints TV, and how did you end up with the job?

Andrew Thompson: It's great fun doing it, especially ‘Saints Scared’. I got the job because I had an interest in the media.

churinga: Thomo, which University does the Club use now for gym, weights etc and have you noticed a big improvement in strength, agility etc as a result?

Andrew Thompson: All weights are done at the Club, the players renovated the gym area and now the facilities are very good, and I think the strength is generally good. There are young players who still need to work on that area but they are showing results slowly.

stclaire: Where do you believe we will finish this year - what's the goal?

Andrew Thompson: I think we'll finish in the 8 and the aim is ... the higher the better!

Joffa: Thomo, are you a fan of any of the less popular sports - baseball, basketball, gridiron, etc - and is there anything that can be learned from watching these sports as far as mental preparation, training and tactics, amongst other things?

Andrew Thompson: I love watching all sport - Tim Watson tried to draw a lot of parallels between gridiron and football, and we use a lot of motivational stuff from coaches in other sports.

Guest95470: The only thing that lets St Kilda down on the field is that they do not have a key full forward. What is your view?

Andrew Thompson: No, I think it comes down to the way the ball comes down to the forward line.

Milne: Do you think Murray will get a game this week, if so, what position do you think he will play at?

Andrew Thompson: I think he's a very good chance to get a game and more than likely, half back flank.

churinga: $$$$$$$$$$$, contracts, resignations etc - Brisbane players appear to be on a mission which will see them make financial sacrifices for the benefit of keeping the playing group together, and thus remain very strong for years to come. Can you see this approach working at St Kilda?

Andrew Thompson: Quite possibly because we've got a lot of players who are going to attract interest from other clubs. I think, but I’m not sure, we have some room still in our salary cap to move.

Joffa: Is media work something you would like to get involved in after your playing career is over? Do you see yourself as a call commentator (like Brian Taylor or Peter Daicos), a colour man (like Dermie and Lyon), a boundary rider (like Michael Roberts), or something else?

Andrew Thompson: Very interested, and I’d like to have a special comments kind of role.

sassafras1: How much longer do you think you will play?

Andrew Thompson: Another 2-3 years I hope.

Spelly: Thomo, who has been your toughest opponent?

Andrew Thompson: In the early days, Paul Kelly from the Swans, and more recently, Michael Voss.

Andrew Thompson: Thanks for your support; I look forward to a successful rest of the season and playing in the finals’ for the first time in five years!
I have to take off, thanks again, and stick with the Saints!
