VICTORIA has received a setback ahead of Saturday night’s Hall of Fame Tribute Match with news Geelong star Gary Ablett will miss the clash with a calf injury.

Ablett, who turns 24 next week, was ruled out of the clash by the Victorian team medical staff on Thursday morning.

The classy Cat had been desperate to play against the Dream Team but a calf strain, which forced him to miss his side’s round seven win over the Brisbane Lions, was deemed to be too much of a risk to let the premiership midfielder take his place in the showcase match.

Ablett had scans on his injured calf on Wednesday, which is believed to have revealed his injury had not yet fully recovered.

On the same day Big V coach and Ablett’s club coach, Mark Thompson, said: “I can tell you right now he’s pretty keen to play.”

Ablett’s father, Gary Ablett snr, represented Victoria 11 times and booted 43 goals.

The Victorian squad is training on Thursday morning at the MCG.
