PORT Adelaide forward Warren Tredrea is in career-best form, according to coach Mark Williams and teammate Matt Thomas.

Tredrea, 30, turned back the clock on Sunday afternoon to finish with a return of 7.4, just one goal-shy of his best ever haul (8.4) against Carlton more than a decade ago.

The four-time All-Australian also picked up 20 possessions and hauled in 11 marks, including one in the dying seconds to secure his side’s three-point win.

Tredrea has been ravaged by injury throughout the latter stages of his career and Williams said the veteran’s form was a reflection of his newfound fitness and freedom.

“I thought Tredders was outstanding today,” Williams said.

“It was as good a game as he’s ever played for the club and it was right up there with the most influential. He kicked goals when we needed them and, in the end, he took that mark fairly deep in the pack.

“I’ve said that not being captain has been good for him. Now, he can smell the roses. He can worry about himself and he doesn’t have to do all the meetings, all the media and all the other things that a captain has to do.

“He’s got two young children now and a wife that needs attention. He can do all those things now. He can walk the dog and enjoy the times in between training and playing rather than being cluttered by other responsibilities.”

Tredrea’s seventh goal came moments after defender Troy Chaplin blew a chance to cover himself in glory.

Chaplin marked in the goal square, but missed the resulting shot on goal from 15m out, directly in front.

Thomas said he knew his side needed a miracle to snatch victory after Chaplin’s miss.

“I just thought to myself that there could only be a minute or two left after that and that we would need something special,” Thomas said.

“Sure enough, Waz stood up and the boys in the middle — Robbie Gray and Brendon Lade — got that clearance, so I was pretty happy”.

“I’ve been here four years and this is the best form I’ve ever seen him in. He hasn’t just done it this week, he’s been doing it for three or four weeks now.”

Thomas, who has also been plagued by serious injury, picked up 20 possessions against the Tigers and impressed with his competitive nature.

The Power led by five goals early in the third term, but lapsed to be 16 points down in the final quarter.

Thomas said it was good to come away with the win.

“It was a bit of a relief after going down by five points last week,” Thomas said.
