AUSTRALIAN football fans are invited to kick off the game’s 150th year where it all began on Sunday March 9.

In the shadows of the MCG, a picnic lunch will be held where the first recorded match was played between Scotch College and Melbourne Grammar in August 1858.

AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou and Melbourne Lord Mayor John So will launch proceedings at 11am on Sunday.

Australian Football 150 Year ambassadors Nathan Buckley, Mark Ricciuto, Luke Darcy, Neale Daniher, Chris Grant and Jason McCartney will be in attendance and available to sign autographs and have a kick.

It includes contributions from more than 23 authors including Australia’s leading historians, academics and writers.

The Australian Game of Football is 396 pages and includes Mike Sheahan’s top 50 players of all time, the Top 10 players to have played in the WA, SA and Tasmania, tactics, coaches, umpires, trends.

The 150 birthday festivities begin at 10.30am outside Gates two and three of the MCG with a kick-to-kick and footy activities for the kids.

Andrew Demetriou and the Lord Mayor will be welcomed on stage at 11am, followed by the ambassadors.
