Petrol sniffing is a major source of illness, death and dysfunction in Indigenous communities.
Sniffing leads to behavioural and social problems and sniffers often get in trouble with the law and can often end up with serious (and irreversible) brain and organ damage.
In response, the Menzies School of Health Research and The Rioli Fund are working together to educate users (as well as those at risk of becoming users) to raise awareness about the dangers of sniffing.
To aid this effort, Menzies has developed a series of flipcharts (pictured, right) to explain the dangers of petrol sniffing.
Hawthorn’s own Cyril Rioli is featured in one of these flip charts to promote healthy lifestyle choices.
The charts are designed for use in rural settings and cater to a range of users and those at risk of becoming users.
By working together with local communities, Menzies is helping to stamp out petrol sniffing.
