The Hawks Museum has received a wonderful collection of tapes of 3KZ radio broadcasts of significant games and Premierships played by the Hawks during the 1970s through to the late 1980s.

Also included are copies of the weekly football publication 'Inside Football' and posters associated with 3KZ football commentary.

Pam Major, the wife of the late Ian Major generously donated the gift.

Ian Major was one half of the popular football commentary team on 3KZ along with former Richmond star, Jack 'Captain Blood' Dyer.

The duo dominated the airwaves from 1970 through to 1991 when Captain Blood retired.

Footy fans adored the continual banter between the pair, with Captain Blood’s popular 'Dyerism’s' now legendary: "that’s the beauty of being small, your hands are close to your feet", "he keeps getting the ball where the ball ain’t" and a classic describing Michael Tuck during a match, "he’s tuckled strongly by Tack" to name a few.

Peter Charleston, a good friend to the Major family and also a former Hawk (1951-53) along with teammate John O’Mahony are to be thanked for arranging this wonderful edition to the Club Collection.

Peter was part of the production team responsible for 'The Captain and the Major' match-day descriptions being broadcast.

He also had the onerous task of assisting Pam Major to find suitable organizations to preserve this remarkable collection of radio broadcasts.

A future exhibit planned for the Hawks Museum will incorporate a vintage radio.

Visitors will be able to listen to games being called by the duo billed as 'The Captain and the Major'.

Listeners will hear a style of commentary that now is long gone; the unique earthy expressions and the misplaced use of words in of Captain Blood and the Major describing classic Hawthorn moments in football history.

We offer our sincere thanks to Pam Major.
