With only a matter of hours until the Australian team runs out on to the field to face Ireland, kangaroos.com.au caught up with Andrew Swallow who says it's a wonderful honour to be selected as vice-captain.

“I’m really grateful to Rodney Eade and the rest of the International Rules coaching panel for the opportunity,” Swallow said on Friday.

The Syd Barker Medal winner was named alongside Geelong's James Kelly and Melbourne's James Frawley in the leadership role, while Brad Green will captain the side.

“Coming into the squad you don’t quite know how you fair amongst all these quality players so to be named joint vice-captain was amazing, especially next to a three-time premiership player in James Kelly.

“In my role as a leader in the squad it’s all about looking after the younger guys and making sure everyone’s working hard and across what we have to do.”

Swallow has never played an international test, but did represent Australia as a 17 year-old and was delighted to receive a call-up after a stellar year.

“I was really excited when I got asked to play, I spoke to a few of the older guys who had played previously and they really enjoyed their time so I thought I would give it a shot,” Swallow added.

“We all have a lot of fun together when training but we’re still very focused and definitely want to win this for Australia.”
