AFL CHIEF executive Andrew Demetriou has threatened to move next year’s grand final away from the MCG, after Cricket Victoria declared it would not allow the ground to be used for football in October.

Due to the admission of Gold Coast next season, the League is planning to hold its showcase game on October 1.

But Cricket Victoria controls the MCG from that day and it has written to the AFL declaring it won’t make the venue available.

“We might have to play it elsewhere, the way things are going,” Demetriou said at LaTrobe University on Thursday.

“It seems a bit interesting that Cricket Victoria want to all of a sudden have the ground unavailable on October the 1st, when there’s no cricket on.

“I think it’s strange. Hopefully some common sense will prevail.”

Demetriou had a blunt message for Cricket Victoria.

“There won’t be any financial compensation and we won’t be entering into any negotiations,” he said.

“If it’s not available, just tell us now.”

The AFL boss said moving the 2011 grand final interstate was an option.

“I’ve already had my phone ringing from people who would love to have the grand final,” he added.

Demetriou said he had not spoken to anyone from Cricket Victoria in the past week to clarify the issue.

“I’ve received some correspondence, which I was disappointed in,” he said.

“But I have had a discussion with James Sutherland, [chief executive] of Cricket Australia, and I think he’s on the right wavelength.”
