MATTHEW Lloyd understands Adam McPhee's presence will add to the spectacle of Sunday's Essendon-Fremantle clash, but the recently-retired champion goalkicker isn't harbouring any ill-feeling towards his former teammate.
McPhee spent two years at Fremantle before crossing to Windy Hill for seven seasons.
However, he walked out on the Bombers at the end of 2009, opting to rejoin Freo via the pre-season draft and with confirmation of a three-year deal. Essendon had offered him two years.
While his decision outraged many supporters - especially with the club receiving nothing in return - Lloyd said he wasn't disappointed in McPhee.
"I've never held a grudge for players," Lloyd said on Wednesday morning.
"I understand that the shoe can be on the other foot at times [and] you've got to do what's best for yourself, and he decided for his family and himself that was the call to make and he did it.
"[So I'd just say], 'Get on with it' … it's a choice he decided to make.
"He made that move to get that extra year and for a few other opportunities."
Lloyd said McPhee didn't need to be forgiven, but his reception would be less than accommodating come game time.
Earlier this week, Essendon coach Matthew Knights said McPhee could be in for some rough treatment from the crowd.
"It will be icy and cool but that's natural," he said.
"When players leave clubs, often the reception they get when they come back is not very favourable."
McPhee, who had just six disposals in Fremantle's impressive win over Adelaide last week, is under a slight injury cloud after rolling an ankle in that game.
But Lloyd believes the 27-year-old will be keen to face his old side.
"I know he'll be desperate to get out there. He's not the type to shy away from the encounter," Lloyd said.
"I suppose for the theatre of the game, we hope he plays."
Adam McPhee is a $340,800 forward/defender in this year's Toyota AFL Dream Team.
