NORTH Melbourne captain Adam Simpson says he and his teammates will still enjoy their week's break, despite the disappointment of Saturday night’s final-quarter fadeout against St Kilda.

The Kangaroos gathered for a golf day at the Sandhurst Club in Melbourne’s south-east suburbs on Monday, and the grey, windy conditions might well have summed up the mood among the playing and coaching group.

But Simpson said despite the round 14 loss it was important his side refresh and enjoy its break.

“We’ve got a couple of days off,” Simpson said.

“We’ve got a golf day today … [we’ll] get away from the club, have a few beers.

“I think you have to enjoy the wins and you have to take the losses in your stride.

“Just because we lost we can’t go flog ourselves on the track … times like that have changed a little bit.

“Physically I think we’re okay. Mentally, a few days off and we’ll get back amongst it next week.”

Simpson acknowledged there was “a lot riding on” Saturday night’s clash with the Saints, making the result all the more disappointing.

But he says his team still has plenty of time to make up for the loss.

“There’s still enough games to go to redeem ourselves,” he said.

“But we have to get more consistent and I think it’s been stated over the weekend that we’re not going to succeed if we have inconsistent performances like that.”

Coach Dean Laidley said after the match that heads might roll in the wake of the loss, taking aim at some more experienced players, and Simpson agreed it was players who had been at the club for some time who had let the side down when the crunch came.

“You could blame it on youth but I don’t think the problem is with the first or second yearers, it’s probably more the core group who have been around for a while and know what it’s about,” Simpson said.

“I’m assuming the pressure’s on those type of players.”
