PORT Adelaide has delisted three players - Marlon Motlop from the senior list and rookie listed players Callum Hay and Matthew Westhoff - while Danny Meyer has announced his retirement from AFL football.
Meyer, 25, played nine games for the Power over two seasons after he was claimed with pick number 20 in the 2009 AFL Rookie Draft from Richmond.
He was elevated from the Power’s rookie list at the end of 2010 but failed to play a game this season after being hampered by ongoing groin injuries.
Meyer has decided to retire to pursue other interests, after 26 AFL games with the Tigers and the Power since debuting for Richmond in 2005.
Motlop was recruited to Port Adelaide as a second round selection (no. 28 overall) at the 2007 AFL Draft.
The 21 year old played five games across the 2008 and 2009 seasons but failed to add to that tally after battling foot injuries in 2010 and a fractured finger in 2011.
Hay, 19, was recruited to the Power via pick number 33 at the 2011 AFL Rookie Draft after a promising 2010 season with North Adelaide in the SANFL.
He represented the Power in the NAB Cup early in 2011 but remained on the rookie list for the entire season, failing to play an AFL game.
Westhoff, 23, was originally recruited by the Power in the 2007 AFL Draft as a second round selection (no. 33 overall). He played six games across seasons 2008 and 2009 but a groin injury interrupted his 2010 campaign.
Subsequently, he was delisted at the end of 2010 before being placed on the Power’s rookie list for season 2011. Westhoff failed to play an AFL game this season.
Port Adelaide Football Operations Manager Peter Rohde thanked the players for their respective contributions and says decisions like this are always very difficult for all concerned.
“Unfortunately, there are only limited places on an AFL list and sadly there are always a few players at this time of the year who miss out,” Rohde said.
“In terms of list management though, it’s important that we have some spots available so that we can improve and develop our playing list through the upcoming trade and draft period.
“Each one of Danny, Marlon, Callum and Matthew have been outstanding characters to have around the Club and they’ve all made some sort of contribution during their time.
“On behalf of the Club, I thank them for their service and wish them and their families all the very best for the future.”
