COLLINGWOOD hopes an extended break ahead of its round seven clash with St Kilda will allow mercurial forward Paul Medhurst the extra time required to recover from an ankle injury.

Medhurst, who injured his left ankle in the Magpies’ impressive 52-point win over North Melbourne on Friday night, has played a pivotal part in two of Collingwood’s three victories this season.

The Magpies have a 10-day break between matches and club football manager Geoff Walsh said the star goalkicker was likely to be “touch and go” for next Monday night’s blockbuster clash with the Saints at Docklands.

“He’s not too bad this morning … at this stage we’re aiming to get him up,” Walsh told collingwoodfc.com.au on Monday.

“The two or three extra days will only be to his benefit. As it sits this morning it doesn’t look too bad.

“It’s still a bit tender and a bit sore but the swelling has been controlled, so we’re hopeful.”

Anthony Rocca (illness) and Heath Shaw (hamstring tightness) were both late withdrawals from Friday night’s line-up but Walsh said both should be fine to resume.

“Heath missed because he pulled up a bit tight and a bit tender from training but the hamstring itself was good,” Walsh said.

“He’s not feeling sore there, it’s just some general tightness in his back and we just didn’t really want to risk knowing that he did have a further 10 days after Friday night.

“Anthony was simply a bit off-colour … there won’t be any issues.”

Walsh said the Magpies had been fortunate they had enjoyed a relatively thin injury list so far in 2009.

And with several senior-listed players showing promising form at VFL level at the weekend, the Magpies should be close to full strength ahead of the Saints who loom as another stern test.

“Steele [Sidebottom] was good, Coxy [Shannon Cox] was good, Danny Stanley has been consistent for three or four weeks,” Walsh said.

“There have a number of blokes there who will no doubt stake their claims [for a spot].”
