Gilbert, who played his junior career with Gold Coast side Southport before he was drafted by St Kilda with pick 33 at the 2005 draft, has signed a new two-year deal with the Saints.
Gilbert has played 40 games for the club since his debut in 2006.
St Kilda’s general manager of football and list management Matthew Drain said he was delighted to see the 22-year-old commit to the Saints.
“Sam is an important part of our team and we are delighted that he has re-committed to the club,” Drain said.
“He is an exciting young player who gives us options with his flexibility, can adapt to playing in different positions and we expect will still develop as a player.”
Gilbert has had a strong start to the season, gathering 20 possessions in last week’s win over the Sydney Swans.
