Two Perth primary schools enjoyed very special visits from West Coast Eagles youngsters last week, thanks to The West Australian Newspapers In Education program.

Midfield magnet Chris Masten dropped into Armadale Primary School, and new recruits Blayne Wilson and Anton Hamp visited students at Hawker Primary School.

Both schools won the opportunity through the West Australian Newspapers In Education (“NIE”) program.

The West Australian NIE program promotes the idea that students who are familiar with and regularly read newspapers are more literate and more civic minded, and as such provide primary and secondary teachers with newspaper-based teaching programs for all levels across several learning areas.

Schools who ordered NIE’s 2011 Footy Pack before this year went in to the draw to win a class visit from West Coast Eagles players.

Teacher Kelly Rann from Armadale Primary School said the visit was a special treat for her students.

“Blayne Wilson and Anton Hamp came and visited our year fives,” Kelly said.

“Blayne and Anton started the session with the students with a few warm-ups, and then a game of handball dodge, which proved very popular and was the highlight of the session.

“The players also shared some of their kicking skills and football tips and tricks with the kids.

“For the students to be up close and personal with AFL players was a real treat, and the session was thoroughly enjoyed by all of them.”
