GEELONG defender Darren Milburn says the heartbreak of missing an AFL grand final will be a bitter pill to swallow for the player involved in making way for Paul Chapman, but it won't affect the Cats' quest for back-to-back premierships.

A closed training session was held at 3pm on Wednesday and Chapman, who has recovered from a hamstring injury, was expected to complete the full session along with his teammates.

If he did enough to prove he is fully fit, the classy forward is likely to play against Hawthorn at the MCG on Saturday, squeezing out a teammate who has helped the Cats reach their second straight grand final.

"Obviously someone will miss out; I'm not sure who that's going to be at the moment," Milburn said at Skilled Stadium on Wednesday morning.

"Obviously that's for the club to decide … that's a part of footy I guess."

Milburn, 31, said whichever unlucky Cat faced the axe in coming days would, as did Mark Blake last year when he was omitted from the team for Steven King, have the support of his teammates and the club.

"Once they've been told I think a few of the guys will have a quiet few words to them," he said.

Milburn said injured defender Matthew Egan faced a similar situation when he missed all of last year's finals series, while ruckman Mark Blake had fought back superbly after facing the heartache of missing last year's grand final win over Port Adelaide.

"He's [Blake's] been amazing," Milburn said.

"He's had a great year. He could have been down on himself and on his teammates but he's really pushed and he's earned his spot in the team."

Milburn, Geelong's most experienced player with 234 matches to his credit, says the mood at Skilled Stadium is on par with 2007.

"Just as confident I'd say," he said.

"We've been playing some pretty good football [so] there's no reason why we shouldn't go into the game confident."
