Wife of the late Peter Crimmins, Gwen Crimmins, has submitted her ULTIMATE Hawks Premiership Team and answered a few questions for hawthornfc.com.au on her selections.

Gwen was married to the 1971 premiership vice-captain Peter Crimmins with whom she had two sons. 

She now presents the Club’s best and fairest award - the Peter Crimmins Medal - each year.

Who are the non-negotiable selections in your side?

Peter Hudson - uncanny with his marking, watching him, you would think he wasn't in a position to mark but somehow he would always get it. He didn't need to run for the ball, he knew where to be. Peter Crimmins gave him all his goals! Huddo made himself an easy target to hit.

Leigh Matthews - Record nine best and fairest seasons. Peter Crimmins and Leigh had a system where they would rotate each five minutes playing full-on on the ball. Somehow the whole team knew who was on and knew who to pass to at any point in the match. They discovered this worked for them and the team - they were a great duo.

Talk us through your selections for coach and captain.

John Kennedy Snr as my ULTIMATE coach because he was the one who started it all, from the Club's first premiership in 1961. Everyone respected him, listened to him and trusted his direction. John always included players' wives - he understood that if the wives were happy, the players would be happy and play better. He wanted wives at every match and encouraged social get-togethers. He even started a creche for the kids under Glenferrie Oval. Kanga made Hawthorn the Family Club.

Peter Crimmins as captain, he was so proud of being the Hawks' captain, he believed it was his greatest sporting acknowledgment (with the 1971 premiership as his greatest sporting achievement). He was a natural leader, he engaged all players and was so welcoming to all. It was funny because everyone looked up to this little guy.

Which players from different eras are you most excited to see line-up in the same team?

Cyril Rioli and Peter Hudson. Cyril is my son Sam's favourite player so it would be great to see how he would play in the same team as Peter, Cyril doing all the running while Peter waits to take it on the chest.

Any curly selections?

I'm not sure that many people would have Brian Douge in their team. So hard-working, uncompromising, and no frills.
