West Coast's Sam Butler is the National's AFL Rising Star nominee for Round 17.

He is the third West Coast player to be nominated this season, following Brent Staker (round seven) and Mark Seaby (round 15).

Butler played well for West Coast on Sunday and earned praise from coach John Worsfold despite the 26-point defeat to Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium.

Since Butler’s AFL debut in Round 10, he has averaged more than 14 possessions in eight successive matches and has stepped up in the past fortnight while skipper Ben Cousins has been sidelined.

Originally from the South Gawler Football Club, north of Adelaide, he was drafted with the 20th selection overall by West Coast last season. He played his SANFL football for Central Districts.
