Friday 20 October 2006The morning was free time for the boys who scattered themselves throughout London doing plenty of touristy things including the Red Bus Tour of London, going to Wimbledon, museums and Churchill War rooms, and some were happy just to wander around Picadilly Circus and Oxford Square.Choco and a few others visited the Winston Churchill statue where they couldn’t help but notice the uncanny resemblance to Power Assistant Coach Dean Bailey! All it took was a couple of props and he’s a dead ringer (see the photo in the
Power in London photo gallery)***The afternoon held one of the special privileges for the team as they all got a tour of the yet-to-be-finished new Wembley Stadium. This is not something that just anyone can do but thanks to Power Ambassador Robert Champion Decrespigny, who is a board member of Australian company Multiplex who is building the stadium, the Power got the royal treatment. In fact, there are only two teams who have so far been allowed onto the new Wembley pitch – the English soccer team – and the mighty Port Adelaide! After undergoing the mandatory health and safety briefing, the boys split into 2 groups for the guided tour which also included visiting the changerooms, the function centre, the Queen’s corporate facility and most importantly, according to Jacob Surjan, David Beckham’s own box painted in Man Utd red! However, the number one highlight was when the team was offered the opportunity to climb the gantry around the ground (walkway on the roof). Those that couldn’t handle it included Pearce, Kingsley and Bailey – and the boys let them know about it!Mark Williams said “climbing this is one of the most courageous things I have ever done” and it was noticed that his legs did appear a little jelly like! He went on to say it was an “outstanding experience that highlights what a great achievement this was by Multiplex, a wonderful company again showing that Australians can be very proud of their own”Darryl Wakelin said it was a “fantastic and unique experience getting onto the pitch, visiting the Queen’s facilities and the amazing views from the Gantry onto the ground that no spectator will ever get to see”
